The annual William Byrd Festival returns to Portland in August, featuring services sung by Cantores in Ecclesia; lectures given by leading scholars Kerry McCarthy, William Mahrt and Katie Bank; and illustrated recitals by ensembles directed by internationally-renowned Byrd experts Ross Duffin and William Dawes. Mark Williams of Magdalen College, Oxford, returns to Portland to give a recital on the organ of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and direct the closing concert, which will include a number of William Byrd’s most famous motets as the festival notes the 400th anniversary of Byrd’s death in 1623.
The complete schedule includes an organ recital, five liturgical services, four public lectures, and three concerts.
Admission for most events is free, with a free-will offering. Tickets for the August 4th, 16th, and 20th concerts are $25-35 general admission and $15 students; they are available in advance at cantores.ticketleap.com or at the door.
