Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, Milwaukie

Our Parish for the Week of August 27

Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, Milwaukie

We are so excited this week to visit Saint John the Baptist as Parish of the Week!

Learn a few great facts about this fantastic parish community.

  • Saint John the Baptist has humble beginnings before Oregon was even a state! The first structure was built in 1864, then a second church in 1911, and a third one in 1966.
  • The Parish School began in 1919, and is about to begin their 105th academic year, now educating children ages two through middle school.
  • Fr. John Marshall has been the pastor of Saint John the Baptist since 2019!
  • The parish takes inspiration from their heavenly patron Saint John the Baptist. Fr. John shares: “We exist to prepare the way to Jesus. We give people access to the Sacraments, lead them in worship, teach them a Catholic worldview, and grow Christ-centered relationships so they can love God and neighbor.”

More fun facts:

  • The parish has a thriving Hispanic community!
  • Saint John the Baptist has worked with the Amazing Parish movement since 2020 and parish leaders have been attending Amazing Parish summits for four years.
  • Over the last five years, the parish became a home to two religious communities. The Missionaries of the Holy Spirit reside in the parish convent for their Provincial House, and provide sacramental and spiritual support to the parish. The Sisters of Mary of Kakamega are a community of religious women from Africa who serve in the parish school. One of the sisters, Sr. Stella Maris Namae, SMK is the school principal.
